Within different industries, items and materials must be transported, stored and protected. This means that there are a variety of different types of materials handling equipment that must be used. Almost all materials handling equipment can be broken down into four different types.

Storage and Handling Equipment

When analysing the varying types of materials handling equipment, this is often categorized as the most basic. Even though it is simplistic in both design and function, this type of equipment is essential. This type of equipment is unique because it is not automated. This is the equipment that is often used during what is referred to as "downtime."

This is essentially the time when materials are not being transported. In these instances, there might be a need to build up stock. This requires the usefulness of storage equipment. The most common examples of this type of equipment include racks, stacking frames and bins.

Systems That Are Engineered

When it comes to handling materials, few types of equipment are as important as engineered systems. The most common example of an engineered system is a conveyor. These types of equipment are used in an industrial setting to efficiently move materials and also for retrieval purposes.

Trucks Used in Industrial Setting

Trucks are also a type of materials handling equipment, but this refers to industrial trucks only. There are different types of trucks that can be used in this setting including those with forklifts and those with side loaders attached. Many of the trucks that are used when handling materials must be operated by a trained individual that rides or walks beside the industrial truck. Hand trucks and pallet jacks are very common. Trucks are primarily used to move materials from one location to another but must be packed beforehand.

Equipment Designed for Bulk

In order to increase efficiency and avoid downtime, bulk handling equipment is also used. Examples of this type include stackers and grain elevators. Storing and moving any types of materials that are in bulk form is done through the use of this type of handling equipment alone. Large amounts of materials are the distinguishable factor that is connected to this type. Loose form materials are often classified as foods and liquids.

Many different types of tools can be used in any industrial setting in relation to materials. However, there are four different types that are most commonly used and offer the highest amount of efficiency. Storing, securing and handling materials requires the use of specifically designed equipment that can't be replaced in industrial settings.
